Franz Jägerstätter was beatified October 26, 2007, in Linz, Austria. This is the book that "discovered" Jägerstätter and his inspiring story of unyielding resistance to Nazi orders and his commitment to the dictates of conscience even at the cost of life itself. When German troops moved into Austria in 1938, Jägerstätter was the only man in his village to vote against the Anschluss (Annexation of Austria). Although he was not involved in any political organization, and did in fact undergo one brief period of military training, he remained openly anti-Nazi and declared he would not fight in Hitler's war. This twentieth century martyr, a husband and father of three, was beheaded for his refusal to serve a ruler his conscience could not accept.

"The real question raised by the Jägerstätter story is that of the Church's own mission of protest and prophecy in the gravest spiritual crisis man has ever known." Thomas Merton

"This fascinating case history is more than about Jägerstätter. It's about us." Studs Terkel

"...the most moving account of heroism to come this way for a long time." Boston Globe

"...a rare and important book, a work of humanity and great scholarly conscience. To have read it is a humbling experience." The Nation

"To read In Solitary Witness is one of the most beautiful and deeply moving experiences that is possible for modern readers." Peter Viereck
