Dr. Ulanov combines half a lifetime of research and devotion with his own translations of Thérèse's poems and prose, allowing us a personal glimpse into the life of the "Little Flower of Jesus." Here we meet Thérèse and her family in all their charm and individuality. The author reveals what was so great, and continues to be so fascinating, about this young saint. Her timeless wisdom and spirituality were recognized by Pope John Paul II in 1997 when she was declared a doctor of the church. Over a century after her death her words and example remain relevant today.

By the time of his death in 2000, Barry Ulanov was a well-known lecturer and author of over 40 books on religion, psychology, and the performing arts. He was a professor of English at Barnard College for 35 years and adjunct professor of Religion at Columbia University. He was an active member of the Vatican II Council, where he was involved in the translation of the liturgy into the vernacular from Latin, and he spoke at the International Eucharistic Congress with Pope Paul VI in Bombay in 1964.

"If, as Pius X said of her, Thérèse of Lisieux was the greatest saint of her century, it was not because of any outward grandeur. She did not do any heroic deed, as the world rates these things. Her struggles were small-scale...her adventures were confined to home and cloister. Her geography was of the spirit, her history of the soul. But they were enough. Within herself, moving always shorter distances, from cell to garden, from bed to chair, from one side of the bed to the other, she was able to do mortal combat against suffering, and to leave such an imperishable and moving record of her warfare of the spirit, that all over the world thousands of others, no larger in worldly achievement than she and as unmistakably afflicted with suffering, have been able to take courage from her example and to find dignity in the smallness and pain of their lives."
