Timothy Radcliffe, born in 1945, was for ten years Master of the Dominican Order, a worldwide religious family of men and women, young and old, in more than 100 different countries. After studies at Oxford and Paris, he worked as a university chaplain in London and then spent 18 years teaching theology at Oxford before being elected Master of the Order in 1992. “We struggle,” Radcliffe says, “with much the same challenges as anyone else: trying to cope with our sexuality, dealing with money, saying our prayers, building community. In fact, I would go further and say that religious life, a phrase I do not much like, only has meaning if it says something about the meaning of human life. Our vocation is to shed some light on the human vocation. If we do not, then we are wasting our time. . . It is true that our vows may seem crazy to our contemporaries — especially in the West. In a society which rightly sees freedom as fundamental to human dignity, how can we take a vow of obedience? When sexual realization is seen as central to human fulfillment, then how can we vow to be chaste? In the world of consumerism, then it seems senseless to promise poverty. Yet it is precisely because our lives go against the grain of the times that religious life has more to say than ever before, and not just to Christians...Each of us only has a few coins to rattle around in his box, as someone said, like a beggar, which is what a Dominican is supposed to be."
