Ancestral Prayers

Here is a treasury of prayers in common use in Western Europe before the Norman Conquest. Many of these prayers are taken from two small manuscript volumes of private devotions compiled by a monk of New Minster or Hyde Abbey, Winchester, who became abbot of his monastery in 1035, and died in 1052. Indeed, many of the devotions can be traced back to much earlier times and, with some degree of certainty, can be said to have formed the traditional private prayers of the people during the centuries of Saxon rule.

The English Prayers of Sir Thomas More
edited with an introduction by Philip E. Hallett

A handsome gift edition of the prayers of Sir Thomas More, the Lord Chancellor of Henry VIII, which were written during his imprisonment in the Tower of London from April 1534 until his beheading the following year. Up to the time his books and papers were all removed at the command of the sovereign, Sir Thomas worked away busily at these devotions. Much has been written recently of Cranmer's gift for English devotional prose. In balance, simplicity and tenderness of feeling, these prayers of Thomas More will fully sustain comparison with his.
